Ok, so today is my birthday.
But what I wanted to share with you today is something that has been getting a bit attention again in the media with all the debate about whether kids should keep score and league tables in sport at schools
And you might not like this, but here’s what this American footballer, James Harrison, said:
“I came home to find out that my boys received two trophies for nothing, participation trophies!
While I am very proud of my boys for everything they do and will encourage them till the day I die, these trophies will be given back until they EARN a real trophy.
I’m sorry I’m not sorry for believing that everything in life should be earned
and I’m not about to raise two boys to be men by making them believe that they are entitled to something just because they tried their best…
because sometimes your best is not enough, and that should drive you to want to do better…
not cry and whine until somebody gives you something to shut you up and keep you happy”
I have to admit…
I do agree.
I’m passionate about family life and seeing everyone around you be happy
^^^ hence why I’m always talking about NOT letting crazy diets stop you eating your favourite foods and enjoying meals out with friends and family (as I once did)
But sometimes, I wonder if trophies like this are priming us to miss the value of problems…
The value of going through the process.
Don’t you think?
My biggest worry being what happens when they actually face problems and ‘failure’ in life?
Like, not getting your way in sport…
like getting a job interview, it seemingly going well and not getting it because ‘you haven’t got the experience’ (as I was told many, many times)
Going for 20 graduate jobs after going to University and getting the right grades but failing the maths test (as I did many, many times).
I can say now that
My biggest lessons have come from finding out the hard way..
Like going bright red whilst public speaking and being told in front of EVERYONE that
If I wanted to do essentially what I do now that
I would have to learn how to communicate and speak so
I can share my message…
And – even – launching our first 4-Week Kickstart programme EVER in Marlborough…
I did it initially FOR FREE at the time
Just to see if people wanted to try it..
And guess what?
I got one person turn up
In a mobility scooter…
(that was Cassie by the way…who is now running 5ks and looking fantastic..check her out here)
Imagine If I would have just thought ‘oh it hasn’t worked, there’s only one person here’
Where would I have been today?
Because it was only from DOING
Practicing and DOING more public speaking
Coaching people who came to me for help
That enabled me to get better…
And be in position today where I can be proud to have contributed in some way to
these awesome ladies HERE…
AND it’s exactly the same when trying to get fitter and in shape…
Especially with the million and one crash diets being promoted by celebrities right now..
From Boom bod to fat burning teas…
You know, we start super motivated thinking that it’s going be all glitter
and that when we drop a few pounds and getting fitter that we’ll be happy
Only to then get a harsh dose of reality when no one is there to support you and adapt it to fit your lifestyle AKA
believing your thoughts about ‘good’ / ‘bad’ foods and going into self sabotage mode..
Because just like James Harrison says…
‘trying your best’
on a crash diet that leaves you thinking about food all day
is often NOT enough to get us the results you want to get the long-lasting results we want..
and blaming yourself does nothing!
Especially as sticking to something that just isn’t fit for you
With no coaching or accountability
Isn’t your fault…
So what do I recommend?
START LEARNING HOW DIFFERENT TYPES AND AMOUNTS OF FOODS WORK FOR YOU AND FIT THEM TO YOUR LIFESTYLE
It’s not sexy
But the results like THESE HERE are
Because, whether you like it or not…
Losing FAT, keeping it off…and fitting back into your favourite clothes..
Lives and dies on whether you can STICK to the ‘diet’ ( if you can even call it that) long-term
^^^ Meaning it has to fit your lifestyle and it is not really a diet lol
Which comes down to habits

Food – 2 litres of water a day and only eating when she is sitting down
Fitness – she’s doing our 4 minute song challenge every morning (she used to think she didn’t have time to exercise before she started these)
Focus – she has to have a bath every day and read her book for 10 minutes (because how you feel impacts what you do and what you do impacts the results you get)
