“It’s fine… they can stay up a bit…”
(we’ve all said that before)
Kids were up watching the football with me.
^^ Italy not making the World Cup… still can’t quite believe that
One by one…
They started falling asleep.
Middle child first.
Then the youngest.
Then the oldest.
Now I had a decision to make…
Do I wake them all up and get them to walk upstairs?
Or…
Do I carry them?
Now here’s the thing…
Since doing my knee back in November (surgery in January)… I haven’t done much carrying of the kids…
(Or school runs).
So part of me thought:
“Probably shouldn’t…carry them upstairs”
But instead…
I just started.
Picked up the youngest first (easy win)
Nice and light. Built a bit of confidence.
Then the middle one.
Bit heavier.
Bit more of a challenge.
Nice bit of progressive overload which is key to getting results with resistance exercise.
Then the oldest…
This was a proper test
Had to stop halfway up the stairs…
Arms going…
But…
Got her there.
All three in bed.
And honestly…
That felt like a bigger win than any “workout”.
Because that’s my why.
Being able to do things like that.
Even when it’s not perfect.
Even when it’s a bit of a struggle.
And it’s a nice reminder to think about your why…
Because real life doesn’t give you the perfect time to start.
It’s messy.
It’s unplanned.
But the great part about that?
You get some unplanned wins too..:
– Carrying kids upstairs
– Getting up off the floor
– Walking up hills
– Feeling strong in everyday life (and the garden)
That’s what fitness is actually about.
And the only way you build that?
You start.
You do what you can.
You build it up.
Just like I did:
Light → medium → “what have I done here” when lifting the oldest
So if you’ve been thinking:
“I should probably start…”

PS. Legs felt this one the next day. In a nice way.
PPS. I enjoyed it too. After all,
Not sure how many more opportunities I’ll have to carry the bigger one upstairs. They grow up fast. Time really does fly.
