How do you know when it is time to lift a heavier weight?

The honest answer is…

It depends.

Helpful, I know

It depends on the exercise, the aim of the session, your form, how you feel that day and what you have already done.

If you are doing a strength exercise and the first repetition looks exactly the same as the last, your technique is controlled and you feel you could comfortably do another five or six, it may be time for a small increase.

Not a heroic leap.

But there will also be times when a lighter weight is the better choice.

Maybe the aim is muscular endurance.

Maybe we want you to slow the movement down, improve the range, work one side at a time or really feel the muscle doing the work.

Maybe your energy is lower that day.

Progress is not only adding more weight.

It can be better technique, more control, another repetition, a greater range of movement or recovering more quickly.

Sometimes the ego may say, “Grab the heaviest weight.”

But it can also be the opposite.

Many people are too nervous to try a heavier weight and simply need the confidence and trust to do it.

This is one reason our sessions are coach led.

You do not have to stand there wondering whether to go heavier, lighter or keep the same weight.

We can look at your form, ask how it feels and help you make the right choice for that session.

Your pace is the right pace, but we will still help you progress from it.

Our next £10 7 Day Trial starts on Monday 5th October.

You can try up to three coach-led sessions in Marlborough, Chippenham, Devizes or From Home.

Comment TRIAL or send me a message and I will send you the details.
