So, I had a moment the other morning at school drop off that really made me think. Picture this:
I’ve got my 1-year-old in the pushchair with his teddy, my 6-year-old running around like a whirlwind, and my 8-year-old talking to her friends lining up ready to go in. I’m messing around with the little one and the teddy—just having a bit of fun.
Then, as my 8-year-old line walks into school, I wave goodbye, and, without thinking, I’m still holding the teddy.
Suddenly, she gives me the look—you know, the one that says,
“You’re embarrassing me.”
Turns out, she thought I was asking her,
“Do you want to take this teddy into school with you?”
Now, I’m sure that moment is coming for me sooner or later… I’m on the road to becoming that dad.
And I have to admit—my dad jokes don’t help. Case in point: last week when my 6-year-old went to a birthday party (it was a wizards and witches theme), she told me she’s going as a witch. So, I say, “Yes, but which one?” She replies, “a Witch.” And I say, “Yes, which one?” (I know, I know, I’m sorry for that one!).
But here’s the point I’m getting at: just like I know it’s only a matter of time before I become that embarrassing dad, the same goes for our health and fitness. We can get away with things for a while, but eventually, it catches up with us.
So, just as I’m reminded to cherish those little moments with the kids before they grow up, I’m also reminded to take care of myself and my health. I mean, we only get one body, right?
Don’t wait until it’s too late. Start now—because the time will come when you’ll need to use it or lose it.
That time might just be now…
