Kickstart your metabolism [how to]
Got this message from one of the ladies after the recent study which BBC covered about metabolism
“Matt, what do you think to this article? Timely given your talk.
Metabolism peaks at age one and tanks after 60, study finds”
I have included the link to the BBC article at the bottom of this.
But what I will say is that
This is a really cool study
Basically showing that our metabolism stays quite stable throughout our whole life, regardless of what we have been told or how we feel.
Even after 60, the decline is still a lot slower than we thought.
This should empower us that our metabolisms are not broken all of a sudden.
What actually happens is people have different metabolisms (as we know, one size does not fit all)
But these have not massively changed…
Rather, things get in the way as you age:
Work/ more responsibility / kids etc could all mean we move a bit less and eat a bit more without knowing.
For me, it’s quite an empowering study.
Again reinforcing the “use it or lose it” theory…
Note: this study doesn’t say that hormonal changes / menopause doesn’t influence the body, just that these changes don’t slow metabolism, but rather can influence things like mood, how much we eat and fat distribution .
I spoke about this more in this video here:

Oh and here is the article from BBC:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-58186710
But one thing I will leave you with are a few things to help you kickstart your metabolism:
- Eat more protein → digesting and absorbing protein burns around 30% of the total calories eaten, compared to just 3% to digest and absorb fats, and 5 % to digest and absorb carbs
- Put on some muscle → muscle does burn more calories at rest…however it is not really this which is significant but rather, the processes in place to build and maintain your muscle ‘tone’. For example, you will need to eat more protein and put a stimulus on the muscle which helps you change your body shape, all boosting the way you feel, energy, how your clothes fit and burning calories in the process.
- Know you are not broken → mindset is everything here too. Believing you are broken and your metabolism is broken…may actually mean you do less. And give up. I can say from working in the NHS with patients diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes that when they are told that diabetes is irreversible and a progressive disease, you can see them think “what is the point?”. Of course, you do not want to promise false hope, but given we know research is suggesting that lifestyle changes can put type 2 diabetes into remission, what might you be willing to do if you knew it could make a big difference?
