“Right.”

That’s what my two year old keeps saying to me.

Then laughing.

Because apparently I say it all the time.

“Right, let’s go.”

“Right, let’s do this.”

“Right, are you ready?”

And he is right.

^^ There I go again.

But it got me thinking…

They watch everything.

Absolutely everything.

A bit like Santa.

Kids. Grandkids.

You can tell them to put their phone down, have a go, do something even if it’s difficult.

But then they see what we do.

I can tell them to spend less time on a screen while I’m looking at my phone.

I can tell them it’s OK to find something hard…

Then avoid the things I find hard myself.

^^ Including me in all of this, by the way.

It doesn’t mean we have to be perfect.

Thankfully.

But perhaps one of the most useful things we can show them is that it’s OK to start something when you’re not very good at it yet.

To ask for help.

To do a bit, get it wrong, learn and have another go.

To make mistakes and not be perfect.

To be brave.

To look after yourself, even when there are other things you could be doing.

That might be your first exercise session in years.

Trying an exercise you’ve been nervous about, with someone there to help.

Or getting back into a routine after life has got in the way.

They don’t need to see you being the best at it.

They get to see you having a go.

And if it helps you feel more confident getting on the floor with them, going for a walk or saying yes to an afternoon out…

Even better.
