That was a conversation I had with my kids at Alton Towers.
We were queuing for one of the rollercoasters.
Pinball?
Spinball?
It’s called something like that
The longer we watched it go round…
The worse it looked.
“That looks fast.”
“Their heads are moving a lot.”
^^ excellent parenting thoughts. I was thinking “I hope I don’t hurt my neck” such a mature thought.
But I said to the middle child:
“If it wasn’t a little bit scary, it would probably be boring.”
We went on it.
Afterwards?
“That was great. I want to go again.”
And that’s often how these things work.
The scary bit is before.
The reward is after.
And starting exercise can feel the same.
“What if I’m the most unfit?”
“What if I can’t keep up?”
“What if my knee, back or hip doesn’t like it?”
“What if I feel silly?”
“Maybe I’ll wait until I’m fitter.”
I get it.
Starting can feel scary.
Even different environments.
Like when I went on the radio last week. But I keep my attention on helping people and how I feel after pushing the comfort zone.
But maybe that’s also a sign it matters to you.
