Fitness is a bit boring. That’s why it works.

I’m going to say something that might sound a bit odd coming from me… a nutritionist and personal trainer for the last 18 years or so…

Exercise is actually pretty boring.

A bit tedious, even.

But so is brushing your teeth.

And you still do that twice a day, every day.

Not because it’s exciting.

Not because you’ve found the world’s best toothbrush.

But because you know the benefits.

You don’t want toothache.

You don’t want dental work.

You don’t want the hassle later.

So you just… do it.

And fitness works in a very similar way.

Most people already know the benefits of moving more and getting stronger.

They know it helps with energy, confidence, aches and pains, and just feeling more like themselves again.

The issue isn’t knowledge.

It’s consistency.

And that’s where people get stuck.

We try to make exercise fun — music, balls, variety, different sessions — and that helps.

But the real driver is this:

You have to keep reminding yourself why you’re doing it.

I’ve felt that very personally recently.

We’ve just been away over Christmas, and with my knee at the moment, the frustration isn’t “missing workouts”…

It’s not being able to go surfing.

Not being able to play with the kids like I normally would.

That’s the pain.

So every day, I remind myself of the benefits.

I do my prehab.

I do the unglamorous bits.

The unsexy stuff

So I’m in the best possible place for surgery and recovery.

That’s what keeps me consistent — not motivation.
