Treat resistance exercise like brushing your teeth

It was great to see mainstream media sharing the benefits of resistance exercise.

It’s something I have been banging on about like a broken record since 2008…

Builds muscle.

Improves bone density.

Reduces risk of falls.

Helps with balance.

Helps with ageing.

Makes everyday life easier..

But this is not new.

The government has recommended doing muscle strengthening exercise twice a week for years.

Not just walking.

Not just steps.

Not just “I’m busy and I carried the shopping bags in one trip.”

^^^ and it was full of tins of mackerel

Actual muscle resistance exercise.

For getting up and down from the floor.

For carrying stuff.

For gardening.

For stairs.

For picking up the kids or grandkids.

For feeling like your body is still yours and not something you have to negotiate with every time you bend down.

And this is how I think we need to look at it.

A bit like brushing your teeth.

You might not love brushing your teeth.

You probably don’t wake up excited about brushing your teeth…

But you do it.

Because the benefits are obvious.

And the cost of not doing it shows up later.

I think resistance exercise is very similar.

You might not love the idea of lifting weights, kettlebells, bands, using a glute loop…

You might feel nervous.

You might not know where to start.

Very normal.

You just need to start.

Safely.
