Why we stop when things are going well

The surgeon said things are going well, the knee brace can come off in about three weeks and then we can assess again with how that goes.

Swelling down.

Movement good.

All on track.

Then guess what happened the very next morning?

I stayed in bed a little longer.

Skipped the ice.

Skipped the morning quad activation.

Skipped a few of the rehab exercises I’d been doing every day.

Interesting, isn’t it?

Human nature.

You get a bit of good news…

You feel better…

And suddenly the routine that got you there starts to slip.

I caught myself laughing at myself and thinking:

“I feel fine… do I really need to do that today?”

But then later on Friday I brought the routine back in again.

And it reminded me of something I hear all the time from people working on their health and fitness.

Things are going well…

They’re losing weight…

Feeling fitter…

Then they stop.

Not because they’ve failed.

But because things started going well.

It’s strange how that works.

We do the things that get results…

Then once we start seeing progress we think we don’t need to do them anymore.

I did it last week.

And that got me thinking about something I often say.

Instead of thinking:

“I need to lose weight.”

Or

“I need to be stricter.”

Try flipping the question.

Ask yourself:

“What would help me feel good today?”

Move your body.

Eat something nourishing.

Get outside.

Sleep better.

Treat your body well.

Because often the advice we give other people…

Is the advice we need to take ourselves.

And most people don’t need a massive overhaul.

They just need a routine that helps them keep doing the basics when life gets busy.

Like we go through in our 28 Day Kickstart.

A simple structure of Food, Fitness and Focus.

A plan.

Support from our coaches.

So you can keep doing the things that help you feel better… even when motivation dips.
