Does fasting actually make you lose more

So I was sent a recent Steven Bartlett podcast the other day (who I do like…apart from some of the nutrition podcasts…), and they were talking about fasting…

And as good as his interviews are — when it comes to nutrition, it can get a bit confusing (and even a little dangerous if you take it at face value).

Here’s what was said

“When you fast, your body starts burning fat — using fat for fuel — rather than breaking down muscle.”

Sounds great, right?

But here’s the truth

When you cut calories — whether you fast or not — your body knows you are in a deficit.

Yes, you’ll burn fat, but you can also lose muscle if you’re not strength-training or getting enough protein.

Fasting and calorie restriction are basically the same thing when you zoom out over weeks or months.

The real difference?

1-  Which one do you find easier to stick to?

2- Are you doing some form of strength training around it and getting enough protein in to ensure you maintain or even gain muscle as you lose fat

^^ so you can change your body shape, tone up, and improve your bone density whilst you are there.

If you prefer skipping breakfast and feel better eating later — great.

If you love your morning coffee and eggs — also great.

Because it’s not fasting vs eating that matters — it’s consistency.

Research shows that whether you fast or just create a calorie deficit over 3 meals and snacks…

There is no difference in fat loss.
