2 things you should probably do for lasting weight loss (with or without medication)

I get asked quite a bit about weight loss medications — especially the new “game changers” you would have seen or may be using too.

Here’s my take…

I’m not a doctor (so always speak to a medical professional first), but I can tell you how they work and what I’d focus on if I decided to go down that route.

In short, these GLP-1 medications mimic a hormone your body naturally produces when you eat. 

It helps you:

Feel fuller for longer

Steady your blood sugar (and the insulin release can help you stay fuller for longer) 

Reduce the constant “food noise”

Maybe even have anti inflammatory benefits independent of weight loss 

Are there any downsides?

Potential side effects are:

  •  Nausea / gut issues
  • Hair loss (3% vs 1% when compared with placebo)..however this is often a side effect of malnutrition. Think zinc, selenium, protein, vitamin E, and calories in general…
  • Muscle loss (again, this is more to do with low protein intake, low calories and a lack of resistance exercise)
  • There may be a small % risk of pancreas issues

But perhaps more importantly, when you stop taking it, the effect stops too.

And without the right habits in place, it’s very easy to put the weight straight back on…so consider taking it slowly when coming off of them and getting some help to do it if you are unsure…

Thing is, whether you take medication or not — I would still recommend:

  1. Get enough protein (1.2–1.6g per kg bodyweight of protein per day OR just protein with every meal)
  1. Do resistance exercise (to protect your muscle, boost your metabolism, bone density, and keep you strong for life)
