How to stay motivated (& Adele)

So yesterday I was sent an article about Adele’s weight loss journey.

And no matter how she’s done it..

I’m just going to say ‘well done’…

Her transformation seems to have taken 1-2 years…

She looks completely different 

And if that makes her HAPPY?

Then that is amazing for her…

But the article that was sent to me was talking about being ‘body positive’…

People have criticised Adele for once saying that her weight didn’t matter

But to now losing weight..

Which I find crazy..

Why?

Well, we are allowed to do what we want.

We are allowed to do what makes us happy. 

I know this sounds like a bit of whine haha

But I just want to stress that

This whole weight loss and getting fit stuff is YOUR journey ..

We all have our reasons for doing it…

And if losing weight makes you happy? 

Then great

If being able to walk up hills without being breathless makes you happy?

Then great

If reducing your blood pressure and controlling your blood sugar levels make you happy?

Then great

If fitting back into your old wardrobe makes you feel happy?

Awesome ..

If ditching the ‘good’ / ‘bad’ relationship with food and actually enjoying food for fuelling your body to do the awesome things it can do makes you happy?

That is amazing…

If being healthy means you feel better mentally (as Sport England recently talked about) 

^^^ I can vouch for being less irritable after exercising.. 

then great 

YOU DO YOU..

We know that diet and lack of exercise is linked with lots of conditions such as Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure & seems to be a risk factor for Covid-19 etc..

And -rightly or wrongly – we’ve had Cardiologists like Dr Aseem Malhotra actually saying that the Government should add to their advice to ‘eat real food, Save the NHS’…

Although ‘real food’ is a term I don’t like, I get the message of cutting down processed foods etc.

But the thing is…

How you stay motivated is by reminding yourself of WHY you want to do this..

Because how you stay motivated is by reminding yourself of WHY you want to do this..

What are the benefits?

What changes if you exercise?

What changes if you eat better?

Get better a relationship with food?

What is the point of it?

Interesting questions, I know.

And – I guess one thing that this pandemic has done is shine a light on how important our health is..

We don’t have much without it..

The great thing about this is that it’s almost take a lot of peoples focus away from just ‘I want to lose weight’

To

“I want to be fit and healthy”

Which  -quite often – just so happens to get you that more toned, leaner look anyway. 

And I know it can be difficult.

But as James Clear says:

“changes that seem small and unimportant at first will compound into remarkable results if you’re willing to stick with” – James Clear

And that’s exactly what happened to Lisa…

And it was amazing to receive this message out of the blue..

And as we speak about happiness,

I really wanted to share this with you

As I hope it inspires you to do what makes you happy:

“It is now over 2 years since I took the decision to put my faith in you.  

I’m very pleased to say, it is up there with one of the best things I’ve done in my life!  

I can’t tell you how much I weigh as I stopped weighing myself a while ago.  I use my clothes as a guide and I’m still a size 10.  I can maintain my weight without having to think about it as all the good habits you taught, are firmly in place.  

I am really pleased to say, I am fit and healthy which is fantastic in these challenging times.  I have to say, the daily exercise is the main thing keeping me sane.  I get up in the morning and it’s the first thing I do.  

Like most people who are working for home, I did start to discomfort eat for no other reason than the food was there.  

That has been knocked on the head now and the only snacking between meals is on fruit.  There is a draw full of chocolate in the fridge and sweets in the kitchen but I am choosing not to have them.  

Like everyone on this rollercoaster of emotions, there are good days and bad days.  I’m fortunate as most days are good but when feeling low, rather than reach for the chocolate, I think of all the positive things in my life, I’m fit and healthy, have a job and able to work from home, have a roof over my head and food on the table, I have the most amazing family and friends and a little dog who is my world.   

This makes me feel positive and not sorry for myself.  

Focusing on what is good right now is so much better than all the negative stuff out there.”

Small habits, compound effect..

2 years on and still going strong.

✅ maintaining weight without having to think about it

✅ daily exercise routine (even if it’s 10 minutes)

✅ accepting the bad days (as they will Happen)

✅ down to a size 10, maintaining and being happy there

And you know what, this is just about being happier.

With your confidence

Self worth

Relationship with food

Energy

Mood

And no number on the scales can do that for you!
